PONDICHERRY: With the increasing number of complaints that the families who had possessed earlier `red colour cards (meant for below poverty line categories of families) had been wrongly issued yellow cards (meant for above poverty line categories), the Government has now come out with a temporary solution to extend the validity period of red colour cards till a full survey was conducted for fresh identification of the families. A release from the office of the Chief Minister said here on Thursday that all those who had earlier possessed the red colour cards but were issued yellow cards could contact their concerned ration shops and get back the red colour cards (they had surrendered to get the new cards) after showing necessary proof. As the Administration expected that at least two months would be needed for a fresh look at the economic status of families from whom complaints had been received that there was a `mess in identification of their economic status' the families could get the ration commodities on the basis of the red colour cards and also preserve safely the yellow cards. After the enumeration 2.9 lakh families were issued cards and the latest figure of the red colour cards were 1.20 lakh in the entire Union Territory. A survey by the authorities found that only 15,000 families had not got the red colour cards. Now a fresh survey would be taken up and its completion would involve at least two months.
