Plan panel gives Rs.15.68 crores for Alappuzha

Panchayat to spend Rs.99.41 lakhs for the disabled, aged and children

ALAPPUZHA: The State Planning Board and District Development Committee have approved an annual Plan at an estimated cost of Rs.15.68 crores for the Alappuzha district for 2005-06, district panchayat president K.H. Babujan said.

Of the total cost approved for the plan, Rs.10.70 crores will be spent for spill over projects, which began last year but are still continuing.

An amount Rs.4.97 crores will be spent on new projects, said Mr. Babujan.

He said the district panchayat has earmarked Rs.5.39 crores for the welfare of scheduled castes and tribes and Rs.1.93 crores for development projects for women.

The district panchayat will also spend Rs.99.41 lakhs for the welfare of the disabled, the aged and children.

Mr. Babujan said the district panchayat had imparted training to 360 women in various trades during the last financial year. The panchayat has earmarked Rs.19 lakhs for providing permanent jobs to those who had completed the training, said Mr. Babujan. He said that the panchayat would provide financial aid to women coir workers to buy mechanised looms.

Mr. Babujan informed that the computer labs in all the schools under the district panchayat would be modernised and the Akshaya Computer Project would also be implemented in the district this year.

The project aims to provide computer literacy to 25,000 educated youth in 73 grama panchayats in the district.

The projects to be implemented by the panchayat include those in agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Efforts are also on to implement projects to develop infrastructure.
