State will back Central legislation on government quota, says Minister

  • Five more medical colleges planned in addition to six proposed
  • MCI requirements for six colleges will be met by December
  • MCI to be requested to inspect the colleges in February
  • Admissions to begin in the academic year 2006-07

BIDAR: The State Government will open five more medical colleges in addition to the six proposed. This is the only way to ensure social justice with the Supreme Court cancelling the government quota and reservation in private unaided professional colleges, Medical Education Minister Iqbal Ansari said here on Thursday.

Chairing a meeting to review the progress made with regard to the proposed government medical college here, he said the Government had expected that the Supreme Court would cancel the government quota and reservation in private unaided professional colleges. The recent judgment was only an interpretation of the order in the earlier T.M.A. Pai case.

According to him, all the infrastructure and manpower requirements suggested by the Medical Council of India (MCI) would be met by December 2005 for the six medical colleges planned in Bidar, Raichur, Belgaum, Hassan, Mandya and Shimoga.

The Government plans to establish five more medical colleges in places including Bangalore, Gulbarga, Koppal and Karwar. The MCI will be requested to inspect the colleges in February, he said.

Admissions will begin in the academic year 2006-07. The aim is to have at least 15 more government medical colleges in the State by next year, he said.

The Government will support Central legislation, if introduced, to restore the government quota in private colleges.

As far as college in Bidar is concerned, the first floor of the building will be completed by December.

Other facilities will also be ready by December.
