BIJAPUR: The State Government, through Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL), will be investing Rs. 9,000 crores to add 3,000 MW to the State grid in the next five years, according to Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna. The 500-MW Bellary Thermal Power Station will be synchronised with the State grid by September 2006. An investment of Rs. 2,000 crores has been made on the project, he said. A sum of Rs. 670 crores has been spent on the 210-MW 8th unit of the Raichur Thermal Power Station. A sum of Rs. 3,700 crores is being invested on the 1,400-MW Bidadi plant. The 400-MW Gundla power station will see an investment of Rs. 900 crores. An additional 230-MW unit will be established at the Varahi power station on which Rs. 320 crores will be invested, the Minister said. Referring to good rainfall in the Western Ghats, he said the storage is satisfactory in most of the dams, including Mani and Supa. The Linganamakki dam has been filled after a gap of 11 years. Based on this, it has been calculated that an additional 1,500 million units can be generated this year. This will fetch additional revenue of Rs. 500 crores to KPCL. On the power distribution set-up, he said as many as 100 new receiving stations will be constructed and 100 existing receiving stations will be upgraded. In the current year, he said, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. will spend Rs. 1,300 crores to improve the power distribution system.
