GUNTUR: The Nurses' Association of Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur held a demonstration on Thursday at the hospital protesting against the `irresponsible' and `provocative' remarks of Guntur-I MLA Sheik Nambur Subhani on Wednesday. Association leader M. Varalakshmi said that the relatives of six-year-old Shahnaz Begum, who died on Wednesday, manhandled the nurse on duty Swarna Latha, alleging doctors' negligence. The MLA blamed the hospital staff and alleged that they are collecting mamools at every stage of treatment. However, post-graduate medical students and the nurses found fault with the MLA's comments and held a demonstration. They later submitted a memorandum to GGH Superintendent P. Bhagavannarayana. Dr. Bhargavannarayana said that there was no case of negligence on doctors' part, as the patient was suffering from gross anaemia. The patient had enlarged liver and spleen, and the parents were not aware of the complications. The girl recovered on Wednesday morning but suddenly developed complications in the afternoon. Despite the efforts of the doctors, they could not save her life, he said. The issue was blown out of proportion as the relatives took the body straight to the district Collector's office, demanding action against the hospital staff, he added.
