Canal from Alamatti to Handri Neeva urged

  • Plea to Widen Mittakandala deep cut canal on the upstream of Kundu
  • Central grant of Rs. 20,000 crores for flood flow canals to impound water sought
  • Former MLA for delinking of Nagarjunasagar and Krishna delta from Krishna river
  • Abolition of riparian rights of all the States demanded

KADAPA: Former Minister and Telugu Desam Party leader R. Rajagopala Reddy on Thursday demanded excavation of four flood-flow canals to irrigate Rayalaseema region to utilise water flowing into the sea during flood years.

The State Government should convince its Karnataka counterpart for digging a flood flow canal from the offshore of Tungabhadra project to Anantapur district, he said at a press conference here.

He also demanded a flood flow canal from Alamatti reservoir to Handri Neeva to meet the irrigation requirements of medium irrigation projects in Rayalaseema region.

As an alternative, he wanted pumping of 100 tmcft. of water from Srisailam reservoir to Handri Neeva, as against 40 tmcft. being drawn at present.

Mr. Reddy also favoured a flood-flow canal from Nagarjunasagar to Somasila reservoir and wanted widening of Mittakandala deep-cut canal, on the upstream of Kundu river, to draw one lakh cusecs of water from Srisailam reservoir.

He sought Central grant of Rs. 20,000 crores for the flood-flow canals to impound water in all the existing and ongoing projects during flood years.

None should have objections to tap flood water going into the sea, he asserted.

    Pat for YSR

Lauding Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for boldly executing irrigation projects in a big way, he urged him to pursue a river linkage with a broader agreement between all the States.

Though heavy rains brought abundant inflows into rivers, reservoirs and irrigation tanks in Rayalaseema region remained without water, he lamented. Nearly 700 tmcft of Krishna water was flowing into the sea and diverting 160 tmcft of water to Rayalaseema would not affect any region's interests, he maintained.

Mr. Rajagopala Reddy demanded delinking of Nagarjunasagar and Krishna delta from Krishna river and their feeding with Godavari river.

Demanding equitable distribution of water resources, he wanted abolition of riparian rights of all the States.
