`Mangal Pande was not the first freedom fighter'

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: : Historian M.S. Jayaprakash has said that Mangal Pande was not the premier freedom fighter of the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. In a statement here on Thursday he said that the first accused in the case was Matadin Bhangi who was convicted by the British Court and hanged to death. Mangal Pande was the second accused in the case. Dr. Jayaprakash said that since Bhangi was the first accused hanged to death for participating in the Sepoy Mutiny, he is the real hero of the first freedom struggle.
