LUCKNOW: Five persons have been killed in flood-related incidents in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh and the army was called in to assist district administration in ongoing rescue work, a senior official said here on Thursday. The district recorded 52 mm rainfall on Wednesday night which aggravated the situation following which the army was called in on Thursdays morning, Principal Secretary, Revenue, Kapil Dev told PTI. About 70 per cent of the district was submerged and communication link broken down, he said, adding five deaths have been reported and several persons were missing.
Motorboats rushed
A team of PAC personnel was engaged in moving people to safer places and 50 trucks containing motorboats have been rushed to the affected area from Gorakhpur and Allahabad for carrying rescue operations, Mr. Dev said.
The State Government had sanctioned Rs 30 lakhs for rescue works and more funds,
Rivers in spate
The Ghaghra, the Tamsa and the Choti Saryu rivers were in spate, he added.
The district received 252 mm rainfall between August 21 and 23. PTI
