Sarai Kale Khan ISBT to cater to 25,000 passengers daily

NEW DELHI: Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister A.K. Walia on Thursday instructed the Public Works Department to start construction of the Sarai Kale Khan Inter-State Bus Terminus which would cater to the needs of 25,000 passengers daily and is supposed to be like the `New York Bus Terminal'.

The instructions were issued at a meeting here co-chaired by him and Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf.

Modern building

Estimated to cost Rs 96 crores, the new ISBT will be spread over an area of 60,000 square metres and will have a modern multi-storeyed building with all amenities for passengers.

Stating that the Delhi Urban Arts Commission had given conceptual clearance to the ISBT's design, Dr. Walia and Mr. Yusuf stressed the need for its early commissioning.

First of its kind in India

They added that it would be the first of its kind in the country as it would be constructed with maximum utilisation of steel, which would bring down the construction time.

It has also been decided to construct a temporary terminal to make space for construction of the new ISBT at the existing bus terminal without any hindrance in providing inter-State transport service to the passengers.

`Speed up construction'

Dr. Walia also instructed both Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Development Authority to render all possible cooperation in speeding up the construction of the ISBT, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 18 months from the start of work.

He also assured the Delhi Transport Minister that monthly monitoring would be done to increase the pace of construction.
