NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma on Thursday described the passage of the Rural Employment Guarantee Bill in Parliament as a historic step that would change the face of villages of the country. Stating that the scheme would fulfil the dream of the late Congress leader, Rajiv Gandhi, by empowering the rural youth, Mr Sharma said it would also bring about a change for the better in the villages.
Sonia felicitated
Leading a large number of Congress workers to the 10 Janpath residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi for congratulating her on the passage of the Bill, Mr Sharma -- who felicitated Ms. Gandhi by presenting her with a garland -- said the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would alleviate poverty and make the rural youth gainfully employed.
Festive mood
A festive touch was lent to the felicitation function as buoyed by the presence of the Congress president in their midst, the workers began raising slogans which electrified the atmosphere. Holing aloft colourful banners and placards with slogans hailing Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi for making the scheme a reality, the Congress workers celebrated their party president's arrival on stage with cheers and claps.
