THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The office of the Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan on Thursday said that the Supreme Court had issued notice to former Power Minister R. Balakrishna Pillai and two others in connection with the Idamalayar case. A statement issued by the Opposition Leader's office said a Division Bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justice B. N. Agarwal and Justice A. K. Mathur, issued notice to Mr. Pillai, second accused in the case P. Sajiv and former KSEB technical member Ramabhadran Nair accepting the petition filed by Mr. Achuthanandan against the acquittal of the three by the Kerala High Court on October 31, 2003. The three persons had been sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the lower Court. The UDF Government had refused to file a special leave petition against the High Court decision. The accusation against Mr. Pillai and others was that they entered into a criminal conspiracy when Mr. Pillai was the Power Minister and awarded two contracts relating to the Idamalayar hydel power project at exorbitantly high rates to K. P. Poulose, a contractor, making pecuniary gains of the order of Rs.2.39 crores.
