A service with a difference
College students want to do service, but differently. The students' union of Ethiraj College has revived the `Pidi Arisi Thittam' of the Mahathma Gandhi days. Students collect a handful of rice and 25 paise towards charity every Thursday. This is organised as a part of their social activities for the academic year 2005-06.
The union comprising Karunya, Smrithi, Taruna, Vaishnavi, Aishwarya, Arya and Anjana, identifies the charitable organisation and donates the collected amount to them. The response has been encouraging, says Karunya Susanna Job, president of the union. Donations have been made to Bala Vihar in Kilpauk and Bala Mandir on G.N. Chetty Road. Students don't want to rest on their laurels and wish to continue this work for the whole year ahead and pass it on to the succeeding years.
