A doctorate at 58
Here's a politician with an unusual trait - serious with academics. Ravi Barathi, organising secretary, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and a former councillor, has received a doctorate from the University of Madras for his research on "Tamil Ilakiya Panbugalum Rajiv Gandhiyum" on May 9.
On his research subject, he says: "Tamils have spread all over the world, have a unique culture and tradition and Tamil literature has a quality that is special. I had the opportunity to interact with Rajiv Gandhi on three occasions and during this time, I was able to see the above mentioned qualities in him."
Mr. Barathi has a postgraduate degree in Tamil literature. An admirer of Kannadasan, the 58-year-old politician has also composed a number of film songs.
