Hotels fined for serving quail without licence
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Wildlife authorities on Wednesday raided a few hotels on Kodambakkam High Road for serving quail meat without licence.
K.S.S.V.P. Reddy, Wildlife Warden, Chennai, said the bird was protected under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Though commercial breeding of the bird was allowed, hotels had to obtain a licence before serving its meat.
Many of the few hundred non-vegetarian hotels served quail meat. Only a handful had the licence.
A fine of Rs. 5,000 was imposed on each of them.
Mr. Reddy said a few hotels had obtained licence, but it expired sometime ago. At least three hotels were serving the meat after their licences expired, he said.
