MANGALORE: The executive committee of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Janata Dal (United) has urged the Government to release adequate financial assistance to the district administration to enable it take up relief works.

In a press release, the party said the district has suffered extensive damages owing to vagaries of nature.

Maximum assistance

B. Mahalinga Bhandary, party functionary, said the district has suffered damage owing to excessive rainfall.

The problem of sea erosion has intensified, agricultural lands have been inundated causing loss to crops, houses have collapsed, and almost all major and minor roads have been rendered unmotorable, he said in the release.

Mr. Bhandary urged the Government to provide maximum assistance to the district administration from the Calamity Relief Fund.

The executive committee adopted a resolution to this effect and has forwarded it to the Government through the authorities concerned, he said. The Janata Dal (U) also urged the Government to come to the aid of arecanut farmers, who are suffering because of pest attack.

Noting that the farmers are already facing financial troubles owing to the crash in price of arecanut, he said only effective Government intervention can save them.
