MANGALORE: The district administration has sought permission of the Forest Department to clear trees in the 35 km stretch between Surathkal and Buntwal, so that road-widening work can be taken up. Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner H.V. Parshwanath said that the project to widen the 35 km stretch of National Highway 17 and 48 and make it a four-lane highway has been cleared by the Government and the work is in progress. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the district administration have sought permission to clear trees in the 35 km stretch. To the question on bad condition of the highway between Surathkal and Panambur, Dr. Parshwanath said the stretch will be handed over to the NHAI. Answering questions about the regulation of traffic in Shiradi Ghats, especially at night, he said he is in touch with the Deputy Commissioner of Hassan and he will soon convene a meeting in this regard. He said there are orders already in force to regulate traffic, particularly the tandem axle vehicles carrying petroleum products, timber, and iron ore. These vehicles are supposed to park only in the designated places and will not be allowed to leave the city after 6 p.m., he added.
