MADURAI: : The Centre and its various departments should substantially increase grants for research and development, Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said here on Thursday. Speaking to presspersons, he said research activities had suffered, as the number of students taking to research and development had come down drastically. Bright students preferred lucrative jobs, especially in information technology. "We should evolve some attractive scheme in research and development also so that students choose it as their career," Dr. Viswanathan said. The research grants in India were meagre. "It is less than 10 per cent of what the United States spends on research activities," he said. "More funds for research will make India self-sufficient in technology. Instead of importing technologies, India could supply newer technologies to other countries," he said. There was a shortage of qualified faculty in engineering colleges. Though this was a global phenomenon, the shortage was higher in India, in the order of 50-60 per cent. Anna University was trying to bridge the gap, bringing out DVDs in 100 subjects at a cost of Rs. 20 crores.
