CHENNAI: Four persons were killed in as many accidents in the city and its suburbs on Wednesday.

The police said that D. Vadivelu, 40, of Tirumazhisai village was riding a bicycle that was involved in an accident with a State Corporation bus comingfrom Koyambedu. The accident occurred around 11.45 a.m. near Nasarathpet junction.

He died on the spot. The bus driver, Angamuthu, has been arrested.

At Chembarampakkam, on the same road, Srinivasan, 40, who was pillion- riding was killed when a lorry hit the two-wheeler from behind. He died on the spot. `Dillibabu,' who was riding, has been admitted to hospital with injuries. They were on their way to a theme park, the police said. The lorry driver, Anbu, has been arrested.

Around 8.30 p.m., the pillion-rider of a motorcycle died in a case of `hit-and-run' at Chembarampakkam.

The police said Raja, along with his friend, S. Ganesan, of Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam, was on his way back home. At Chembarampakkam, their vehicle was hit by an unknown vehicle, which sped away. Ganesan died on the spot, the police said.

Road-laying work

Raja, who was riding, has been admitted to a nearby hospital with injuries.

The three accidents occurred on or near the National Highway, which has become crowded especially between Poonamallee and Sriperambudur with the growth of industrial houses and educational institutions. Road-widening work on this stretch has been delayed inordinately.

At Pulianthope, a Corporation lorry fatally knocked down a 36-year-old man who was riding a two-wheeler, around 1.10 p.m.

He was going from Stephenson Road to Pulianthope High Road.

The lorry hit the two-wheeler from behind, injuring him on the right side of the shoulder and head.

He was taken to Stanley Medical College hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The lorry driver, Raja, was arrested. The police are investigating.
