HYDERABAD: The State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the State Government to announce a special package of Rs. 5,000 crores for the current year for the development of the Telangana region.

The party has criticised the State Government for adopting a "negligent attitude" towards the development of the backward region.

The CPI (M) activists led by party's Polit Bureau member B.V. Raghavulu picketed the Hyderabad district Collectorate on Thursday in support of their demand for accelerated development of Telangana region. With the activity in the Collectorate coming to a standstill following the protest, the police arrested the agitating party members but released them later.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Raghavulu launched a trenchant attack on the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti leaderships for achieving nothing for Telangana despite tall claims. The Congress and TRS parties were in power both in the State and Centre for the last one-and-a-half years but did nothing to secure sufficient funds for completing the pending irrigation projects.

G.O. 610

The Government also failed to implement the recommendations made by the one-man Commission headed by Girglani on G.O. 610.

"While development of Telangana is the only solution to check the activities of Maoists, the Government has no proper data about the backward areas in the region," he said.

The protest by the CPI (M) was only the beginning and the party would intensify its agitation if the Government fails to concede its demands.
