KOCHI: A documentary on medical education called `Diabetic foot care for doctors' has been produced by the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS). The 40-minute documentary has been made under the guidance of Arun Bal, diabetic foot surgeon. The film was released at a function at the AIMS on Wednesday by Ali Foster, formerly attached to Kings College, London. The new initiative of creating a teaching video for primary care doctors on diabetic foot care is the first of its kind in Asia, according to AIMS. The first copy of the DVD was received by A.K. Das, Additional Director of Health, Government of India. Prem Nair, Medical Director of AIMS, presided over the function. Doctors N.N. Asokan and Dr. Bal were among those who spoke. Foot infection is a complication of diabetes, which if not properly treated, can result in amputation or even loss of life. Every 30 seconds, one diabetic patient is losing his leg, the doctors said. The International Diabetic Federation (IDF) has declared the theme for this year's World Diabetes Day as `Prevention of loss of limbs in diabetic patients.' The first step to prevent diabetic foot problems and amputation is to educate the patients about proper foot care to avoid injuries.
