JNU hunger strike called off

Protest against rejection of a student for a direct Ph.D programme

NEW DELHI: The four-day-old relay hunger strike by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in protest against the rejection of a student for a direct Ph.D despite the recommendation of the department concerned was called off on Thursday following the University's decision to reconsider the case.

The call for withdrawal of strike, however, came only after a nightlong drama on Wednesday. According to officials, the Chairperson of the Centre for Arabic and Persian Studies, Ehnasur Rehman, had a disagreement with the administration over the admission with things turning ugly when an administration officer told the professor that all the University's problems seemed to be coming from the Arabic Centre.

Upset over the statement, Prof. Rehman decided to resign but was eventually convinced by students against the idea.

The trouble began when the direct admission of Masood Alam was rejected.

His case had been recommended by the Arabic department, as he was found to have done quality work and had many publications to his credit.

But the Dean of the School of Indian Languages was reportedly unconvinced and rejected Alam's admission recommendation on the ground that he had failed the University's M.Phil entrance test.

Student organisations were told Alam's admission was against the spirit of the University ordinance.

Nothing wrong

``We did check the University ordinance and found nothing to authenticate the claims.

He had applied for both M.Phil and direct Ph.D and his failing one had nothing to do with the other.

After our demonstration today, the administration has assure to look into the matter and in view of that we have called off the strike,'' said JNUSU President, Mona Das.
