BANGALORE: We have all heard about daredevils and the adventurously inclined braving extreme weather to conquer mountain peaks. But here is a first. In an extreme field test, the computer hard drives manufactured by Seagate were able to withstand `punishing and unpredictable' conditions not in the controlled confines of a laboratory or a factory but in the slopes of Mt. Everest. Recently, two of Seagate's external hard drives the 100-GB Portable External Hard Drive and the five GB pocket hard drive were accompanying a team of climbers that attempted to conquer the world's highest peak. The team's guide, Jim Williams, brought the hard drives with him as far as the 17,500-foot base camp. According to the manufacturers, Seagate's drives are specified to work at 10,000 feet. "The drives performed very well," said Williams. "We used them to back up pictures and e-mail. It was a relief that the drives operated so well, because we have had problems in the past with our laptops at those altitudes," he added. After spending several days adjusting to the altitude, the team left all essential gear, including the Seagate drives behind at the base camp and continued up the mountain's southern slope. But bad weather did not allow the team to complete the expedition. They had to brave strong winds. But the Seagate drives seemed to have survived the big ordeal.
