Echoing Rajaji

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has gone on record as telling journalists in Singapore that "India will have to compete with China, but what we have to learn from them [the Chinese] is: don't stick to dogmas, learn the truth from the facts" (Aug. 25). It will be pertinent to recall here that this was the approach of C. Rajagopalachari all through the seven decades of his political career. That it has been given public expression to, by a veteran Communist party Chief Minister, on alien soil, is of historic significance. Is not our national motto, Satyam Eva Jayate?

K. Vedamurthy,
Chennai
