Maoists kill one

MAHABUBNAGAR: Members of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) shot dead one Jala Lingaiah of Kalvalonipally branding him a police informer near Vatvarlapally village in Amrabad mandal on Friday. According to information, Lingaiah who started for Achampet on Friday morning was picked up by a group of Maoists at Mannanur stage. - Correspondent

Farmers' agitation against urea shortage

Sangareddy: Agitated over the delay in delivery of urea for the third day, farmers organised a rasta roko in Medak town. Hundreds of farmers lost their temper when authorities asked them to bring farmer passbooks for delivery of the fertilizer. Similar conditions prevailed in Sangareddy, Papannapet, Jogipet, Toopran and Sadasivapet.

Meanwhile the Joint collector of Medak, Vani Mohan, said that 4,800 tonnes of urea would arrive from Hyderabad. In addition, orders for 5,500 tonnes have been placed from other States. - Staff Reporter

Couple, son found dead

Nellore: A couple and their five-year old son were found dead in Isukamitta area of Sullurpet town of Nellore district on Thursday evening. Just before the suspected suicide, the deceased reportedly invited their relatives and offered them new clothes. - Staff Reporter

YSR to unveil memorial

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will unveil a memorial for the three youths who laid down their lives in the agitation against power tariff hike on August 28, 2000 at Basheerbagh.

Though, the memorial - a pylon - was supposed to be inaugurated last year itself, it was postponed due to the election code in place then. - Special Correspondent

Advocate appointed to administrative tribunal

HYDERABAD: B. Venkateshwara Rao, an advocate of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has been appointed Member (Judicial) of the Central Administrative Tribunal, Kolkata branch. Orders to this effect were issued by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on August 24. - Staff Reporter

Rythu sangam demands work in four districts

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham has demanded steps to create work in four districts for overcoming drought-like conditions there. S. Malla Reddy, general secretary, in a statement issued here on Friday said severe drought conditions were prevailing in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Prakasam districts, because of which kharif sowing was not taken up. Nellore district did not receive sufficient rain. - Staff Reporter

Ration card application formsin Telugu sought

KURNOOL: Telugu Bhasha Vikasa Udyamam (Telugu Language Promotion Movement) leaders decided to serve notices on the Collectors of 23 districts urging them to introduce ration card application forms in Telugu honouring the court verdict.

Man, son buried alive

KADAPA: Tragedy struck a family when a man and his son were buried alive while they were fast asleep and three others of the family sustained injuries when their dilapidated house crumbled in Sunnapubatti street in Proddatur town after Thursday midnight. - Staff Reporter

Inter-State bus service introduced

KARIMNAGAR: The APSRTC Karimnagar region has introduced an inter-State bus service between Karimnagar and Gadchirowli via Chandrapur of Maharashtra on Friday. The bus will start from Karimnagar at 8.30 a.m. and reach Gadchirowli at about 4.45 p.m. In the return journey the bus will start at 8.30 a.m. and reach Karimnagar by 4.45 p.m. The bus fare from Karimnagar to Gadchirowli is Rs. 153 per adults and Rs. 77 per child. - Staff Reporter

Awareness meet on ragging

KURNOOL: An awareness meeting was conducted for the students of Minority Government Polytechnic to educate them about the ill effects of ragging on the campus. The meeting was planned in the wake of complaints of ragging of juniors in the college. The Principal, S.Md. Khaleel Ahmed and Sub-Inspector V. Srinivasa Reddy addressed the students. Those indulging in ragging would be punished under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, the SI said. - Staff Reporter

40 red sander logs seized

KADAPA: Tsundupalle police seized 40 red sander logs being transported in a tractor, concealed under a load of red soil, near Bhairavagutta in the mandal on Thursday evening. Tsundupalle Sub-Inspector Sudhakar Reddy arrested the driver, G. Basha, and registered a case. Two women and a man fled by jumping off the tractor. The seizure was made on a tip-off, the police said. - Staff Reporter

Vandemataram celebrations CHITTOOR: Children of private schools took out a procession across the streets of Chittoor town in connection with the centenary celebrations of Vandemataram here on Friday. The Vandemataram committee headed by president Venugopal, secretary S.S.K. Raja and publicity secretary Babu Kiram organised the celebrations and garlanded the Gandhi statue on Prakasam road. - Correspondent

Revised pay scales for Grameena bank staff

TIRUPATI: As many as 70,000 employees working in 196 branches of Grameena banks across the country would get a pay hike with retrospective effect from November 1, 2002 as per the recommendations of the 8th Pay Revision Commission. The Chittoor District unit of the S.V. Grameena Bank Officers and Employees Organisation in a statement here hailed the announcement to this effect by the Union Finance Minister, P.
