Angrej, Gurdeep and Raja set records

Principal Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: The senior National senior powerlifting championship, now in progress at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here, is walking straight into the record books — for creating records. Already 19 new records were set.

"It's truly amazing," said P.J. Joseph, former international and Indian Powerlifting Federation vice president. "There never has been a National like this, with records in every class in the men's competition."

For the record, just nine records were set in the last edition of the meet held in Delhi, and 11 at Managalore a year before.

The record-breakers on Friday, the third day, were Angrej Singh of Haryana (men's 82.5 kg squat and total), Gurdeep Singh of Punjab (82.5 kg bench-press) and V. Raja of Railways (men's 90 kg squat and total).

Meanwhile, former Indian football captain I.M. Vijayan has announced a prize of Rs. 10,001 for the local hero P. Suresh, who created three new National records in the 52kg class on the opening day, on behalf of Boxer Sports Good Company, of which he is the chairman.

The results: Men: 82.5 kg: 1. Angrej Singh (Har), (330 squat: NR; OR: 315, 165 bench-press, 305 dead-lift, 800 total: NR; OR: 790). 2. Gurdeep Singh (Pun), (320, 192.5: NR; OR: 182.5, 250, 762.5). 3. Sakala Suryanarayana (AP), (270, 142.5, 317.5, 730).

90 kg: 1. V. Raja (Rly), (322.5: NR; OR: 317.5, 182.5, 330, 835: NR; OR: 810.5). 2. A.K. Lawrence (Rly), (305, 165, 332.5, 802.5). 3. Anuj Vasisht (UP), (315, 185, 285, 785).

Women: 48 kg: 1. Sudhra Prabhu (Kar), (147.5, 77.5, 140, 365). 2. S. Manjusha (Ker), (145, 77.5, 130, 352.5). 3. Ashu (Cht), (115, 57.5, 142.5, 315).
