VETA to teach spoken English to underprivileged students

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: They will not be so tongue-tied any more when they have to speak or reply to questions in English. Not even if they have studied in Kannada medium all along.

The Government of Karnataka has appointed VETA (formerly Vivekananda Institute), which specialises in Spoken English, to provide free training to poor people. The courses provided will train, educate, empower and provide equal opportunity to the deprived section of society. The State Social Welfare Department has invited Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes candidates from throughout the State to come forward and use this opportunity. With most jobs now demanding good English-speaking skills, this initiative is looking at matching this need. All eligible candidates can walk into the VETA centres for a counselling session, which will be followed by a selection session.

Commissioner for the Social Welfare Department K. Shivaramu says: "This is a first of its kind project in English communication, where the Government will provide financially backward candidates an opportunity to become competitive."

A team of courseware professionals have designed and developed training courses to enhance the competence of candidates in the job market.

This will empower the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes candidates with pragmatic communication skills and knowledge, leading them to opportunities in all sectors.

V. Rajagopalan, VETA Director, said: "The course will be imparted at the VETA centre in Bangalore to start with and later at other centres in the rest of the State.

"The graduates, who undergo the advanced course, will be helped with placement."
