CHENNAI: With only a day to go for the end of counselling for admission to engineering colleges in the State, there are 11,996 seats still up for grabs under the Single Window System. Going by the current speed of allotment, the authorities expect about 11,500 seats to remain unfilled. In the nearly month-long counselling in four centres, 30,540 seats had been taken till Friday evening, according to the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions website of the Anna University. The "circuit branches" of computer and IT related courses have been the most sought after this year. But even in these courses, a few thousand seats are going abegging. For instance, in Computer Science and Engineering, there are 1128 seats available, while 5,995 seats have been allotted in this course alone. There are 1477 seats in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and 2770 seats in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE). Analysts point out that students and their parents have been "very selective" this time, going more by the colleges and their credibility rather than the mere courses. As such, even if over 6000 seats are available for the asking in these three branches and Information Technology, they have been spurned because of the colleges where they are still on offer. Another significant pointer from this season's admission appears to be the reluctance of students to go in for the traditional courses such as Civil and Mechanical engineering. The vacancy list includes 1553 Civil Engineering and 2305 Mechanical Engineering seats.
