SHIMOGA: A visit to Kuppalli — the native place of renowned Kannada poet and Jnanpith Award winner Kuvempu — in Tirthahalli taluk on Saturday was a memorable experience for Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. He showed interest in knowing things about everything related to the poet.

Mr. Chaturvedi went round many monuments dedicated to the memory of Kuvempu, where he spent nearly two hours showing keen interest in knowing about the life and works of the poet.

He visited Kavi Shaila — a rocky hillock beside the poet's ancestral house, where Kuvempu drew inspiration from the natural surroundings for his literary pursuits.

The Governor paid floral tributes to the poet's samadhi at the Kavi Shaila, where he planted a sapling of "Punarpuli" to mark his visit. He also saw the progress of the construction of Kuvempu Bhavan at Kuppalli.

The Governor spent nearly an hour at the ancestral house of Kuvempu nestling amidst the natural greenery which has been turned into the national museum dedicated to the poet's memory. He went round the permanent pictorial gallery where the rare pictures of the different phases of Kevempu's life are displayed.

Mr. Chaturvedi evinced keen interest in knowing more about Kuvempu's life and works. He suggested that the poet's famous autobiography "Nenapina Doniyalli" be translated into English for the benefit of non-Kannada readers.

President of the Rashtra Kavi Kuvempu Pratishthan and former Judge of the High Court N.D. Venkatesh received the Governor on his arrival. Secretary of the Pratishthan Kadidal Prakash presented some of Kuvempu's works to the Governor.

Noted singer Vasanthi Shenoy regaled the gathering with her rendition of Kuvempu's poems.

Those who were present on the occasion included Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University K. Chidananda Gowda, MLA from Tirthahalli Araga Jnanendra, Deputy Commissioner and Member Secretary of the Pratishthan T.K. Anilkumar and Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy.

Later, the Governor left for Jog Falls.
