KANNUR: The North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) has urged Railway Minister Lalu Prasad to take steps for improving facilities in the Kannur railway station. In a representation to the Minister, the NMCC said that the railway station was in need of a second entry point. At present passengers coming from the northern side of the station (from the bus stand) had to cross the railway track to reach the station. The second entry point would also reduce the congestion in the platform, the petition added. It also appealed to the Minister to open an additional ticket counter. The NMCC also wanted platforms 2 and 3 to be fully covered for protection against the elements. At present only a half of the platforms were covered. Most of the south-bound trains were now arriving at these two platforms, the representation said. It also urged the Minister to take steps to construct a foot over-bridge on the southern part of the railway station. Adequate roofing from the roadside to the railway station entry point would also protect passengers in rainy season. The NMCC also sought the Minister to expedite the proposal to extend the Kannur Express Train to Kasaragod. A new train from Kannur to Bangalore via Mangalore and Mysore be provided, the representation said. Referring to the proposal to start a Mangalore-Goa Janashatabdi Express Train, the representation said that if the same train was extended to Kannur so as to reach here at around 2 p.m. and start from here at 2-30 p.m., the passengers coming and going from Ernakulam side could get connection to the Intercity Express. The NMCC also urged Mr. Prasad to take steps for the electrification of the Mangalore-Shornur line as the doubling work was about to be completed. The NMCC also wanted a pit line and maintenance centre here for the trains starting from here.
