Four suffer burns in accident

KURNOOL: A woman and three children suffered serious burns in an LPG fire in Wanaparthi town of Mahabub Nagar district in the early hours of Saturday. They were admitted to hospital here in a critical condition.

According to reports, Jalojamma (32) and her sons -- Venkateswara Reddy (13), Hussain Reddy (16) and her sister's son Sankar Reddy suffered serious burns. A boy who was not aware of the leaking LPG in their house switched on the light causing serious explosion. Jalojamma suffered over 90 per cent burns.__Staff Reporter

Cloud-seeding in Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM: Cloud-seeding by an aircraft will be taken up from Visakhapatnam on a trial basis, Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna told a press conference here on Saturday. The agency conducting cloud-seeding in other parts of the State would send an aircraft as soon as the Indian Navy, which controls air traffic in the city, granted permission. Radar support for the aircraft would be available after October when the Doppler radar here was expected to be commissioned. In the meantime, cloud-seeding would be done with the help of satellite images. __Special Correspondent

Selected referee for world event

KARIMNAGAR: The district police karate instructor and Okinawa School of Karate chief instructor K. Vasanth Kumar, has been selected as referee for the world karate and kick-boxing championship which will be held from September 24 to October 2 in Moscow, Russia, according to a press note here on Saturday. __Staff Reporter

UAE Minister visits Puttaparthi

ANANTAPUR: The Minister for Education, Youth and Sports and a member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates, Sheik Nahayan, Mubarak Al-Nayan, visited the spiritual town Puttaparthi on Saturday and took the blessings of Satya Saibaba.

He arrived in at Puttaparthi in a special flight around 8.30 a.m. and had a one-hour special darshan of Saibaba in the green room. Later, he told mediapersons that he was attracted by the social service activities of Saibaba. He left for Hyderabad at 10.30 a.m. __Staff Reporter

`Technology bazar'

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised `technology bazar' at its premises on Saturday.

The exhibition, organised in association with the ICFAI Centre for Entrepreneur Development and inaugurated by the FAPCCI president, C.V. Atchut Rao, provided a platform for bringing together SME entrepreneurs and technology providers. Ten technology providers from across the country including IICT, DSIR (ICPP), ERDA, NRDC, ICRISAT and C-DAC participated in the exhibition and interacted with the entrepreneurs, according to a press release.__Special Correspondent

Judicial remand for Revolutionary writers

MAHABUBNAGAR: The Munsiff Magistrate, Jadcharla, Mallaiah, on Saturday remanded revolutionary writers Varavara Rao and G. Kalyan Rao to 14-day judicial custody. They will remain in the Central Prison, Chanchalguda, up to September 9.

Earlier, police produced the two leaders of the Revolutionary Writers Association (RWA) in the court in connection with the killing of a police constable, Prakash, at Balanagar, in Mahabubnagar district, on March 18 this year.

Pragna Award for two persons

HYDERABAD: The "Pragna Puraskar" for 2005 will be awarded jointly to M.V. R. Sastry, editor, Andhra Bhoomi, and J.S. Rajput, former director of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The award, instituted by Pragna Bharati, will be given at a function here on September 10 by Former Union minister and Rajya Sabha member, Arun Shourie. Special Correspondent

Nellore: The police in Rapur panchayat received a complaint relating to theft in three temples in the area, on Friday. The offenders reportedly took away only cash. The police are investigating. - Staff Reporter

Woman sets herself ablaze

Kurnool: A 34-year-old woman, Suvarnamma, of Ontedudinne in Uyyalawada mandal attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze after she was allegedly insulted by a person in the village.

Teacher salaries may be delayed

Nellore: Teachers in 38 mandals of Nellore district face the risk of getting their salaries this month late due to the absence of officials concerned. While 38 ZP high schools do not have headmasters, 18 mandals lack education officers. Normally these posts are filled by promotions, but the process was held up due to the language teachers approaching the Tribunal. - Staff Reporter

Mobile eye testing camp at Kadapa

KADAPA: As many as 2,761 school students in Kadapa district suffered from refractive errors Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Saturday. He inaugurated a mobile eye testing camp at the Municipal Boys High School here and gave away spectacles to 100 students. The District Blindness Control Society Secretary, E. Pandurangaiah, DPEP Coordinator, Easwaraiah, school headmaster, Subba Reddy, also took part.- Staff Reporter
