BHUBANESWAR: A young Dalit woman who was banned from cycling through a village in Orissa on her way to college has been provided security cover. On Monday, a woman sub-inspector accompanied Mamata Nayak as she cycled to college, about 7 km from her village. Ms. Nayak's story had rocked the State after it emerged that residents of Nanput had objected to her cycling through the village. They called a meeting, where Ms. Nayak's father, from the neighbouring Narasinghapur hamlet, was warned not to allow his daughter to pedal along the village road. Ms. Nayak, the first girl from her village to pass the matriculation examination, was so crestfallen that she did not go to college for two days. She resumed later but on nearing Nanput she would push her cycle, and ride it only after crossing the village. Khurda Superintendent of Police Amitabh Thakur said the security escort would continue.
