TDP for action against civic official

Bungling of electoral rolls in local bodies elections alleged

  • TDP hopeful of SEC initiating disciplinary action
  • Desam leaders vow to continue agitation
  • Congress to adopt consensus method

NELLORE: The Telugu Desam Party has urged the Government and the Election Commission, to initiate action against the Municipal Commissioner as well as the Revenue Divisional Officer, Nellore, for their alleged role in bungling of electoral rolls relating to forthcoming municipal elections.

Addressing the party workers before the main entrance to the corporation office, here on Monday, as part of the party's dharna, the functionaries, including the district party chief, S. Chandramohan Reddy, ex-Chairperson, T. Anuradha, ex-councillor, K. Srinivasulu Reddy and ex-M.P. U. Rajeswaramma, expressed shock at the indifferent attitude of the administration and Government, in not initiating action against the officials, despite a detailed representation backed by relevant documents.

The same was brought to the notice of Election Commission and they hoped that soon there would be disciplinary action. However, the party's agitation would continue, they warned. Mr. Chandramohan Reddy, took exception to the behaviour of the Commissioner, in attempting to book a police case against an ex-councillor and remarked that in that case, there would have been hundreds of such cases against the official, for various bunglings in the corporation.

Mr. Chandramohan Reddy alleged that a `commission culture' has been ruling the corporation with every department busy collecting kickbacks and the town planning department turning blind eye to the open violation of rules by realtors. Pointing to the recent remarks of the Primary Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, that the Commissioner, did not meet her during the last 14 months, Mr. Reddy, remarked that it only showed the highly indifferent attitude of the official. `During my tenure as Minister, such instances never happened', he claimed.

The functionaries questioned the mysterious silence on the part of district administration and asserted that it proved beyond doubt that there were attempts to shield the guilty. They however expressed hope, that the State Election Commissioner, would at least take cognisance of the state of affairs in the corporation. Mr. Srinivasulu Reddy, alleged that he was deprived of his earlier division to contest in the coming election, but vowed to fight the Congress from some other division.

    Formalities

Notwithstanding the allegations levelled by the TDP, the Congress functionaries in Nellore have decided to go ahead with the formalities connected with forthcoming municipal elections, for which an official notification has been released.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the party's district vice-president, S. Penchala Reddy, informed that it has been decided to field only those functionaries who are loyal to the party.
