Rs. 480 crores worth sugarcane crop lost

Staff Correspondent

Sugar factories in Belgaum district likely to face shortage

BELGAUM: The loss due to the recent floods to sugarcane growers is estimated at Rs. 480 crores, which is bound to create "shortage" problems for the sugar factories in the district as well as those established under the Multi-State Co-operative Act in the border districts of Maharashtra, according to Minister for Sugar Amaregowda Bayyapur.

Addressing presspersons after holding a review meeting with officials on the damages to the sugarcane crop due to floods in the district here on Friday, he said sugarcane crop in 47,000 hectares has been affected.

Asked whether the government will make alternative arrangements to ensure supply of sugarcane to the factories in the district, he said there is no option but to leave the factories to fend for themselves. He said that more than Belgaum district and other parts of north Karnataka, the damage to sugarcane crop is much more in Maharashtra.

"If 10 factories are to face shortage in Belgaum district, there are 80 factories in Maharashtra. From where should we get sugarcane now?" he asked.

However, he said the managements of the sugar factories have been requested to adopt a humanitarian attitude and supply free shoots to sugarcane growers who have suffered huge losses due to the floods.

Asked about the efforts taken by the State Government on including sugarcane in the Crop Insurance Scheme, he said many State Governments are lobbying with the Centre in that regard. The Centre has said that it will consider the request, but there is no concrete assurance yet, he said.
