VISAKHAPATNAM: In a move aimed at weaning Girijan youth away from the Maoist influence, the Police Department has withdrawn cases against 266 sympathisers booked in seven police station limits of Visakhapatnam district. The decision to lift the cases, in accordance with the Government's instructions, was announced by Visakhapatnam (Rural) Superintendnet of Police V.V. Srinivasa Rao on Monday. ``The Maoists have been exploiting the innocence of Girijan youths and using them as pawns in their destructive activities,'' he stated. The cases had been booked under the AP Public Security Act since 1992 against girijan sympathisers of Maoists (then CPI-ML-People's War). The Girijans were involved in assisting the Maoists organise their meetings, tying banners, providing shelter and vehicles, distributing pamphlets and helping in attacks when the ban against Maoists was in force. The maximum number of 62 persons against whom cases have been lifted are under Koyyuru police station limits, followed by Sileru (53) and G.K. Veedhi (49). Annavaram (35), Anantagiri (31), Chintapalli (21) and Mampa (15). Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the details of persons against whom cases were withdrawn would be made available in all the police stations in the agency. He hoped the decision to lift cases would bring about a change in the attitude of Girijans.
