SALEM: The Department of Physics of the Periyar University conducted a two-day seminar on `Recent Trends in Physical Sciences Research'. Inaugurating the seminar here on Monday, Head, Department of Physics and Centre for Non-linear dynamics of the Bharathidasan University, M. Lakshmanan, said asking appropriate question at the right time on even a simple physics concept would lead to new development.
`Analyse information'
He demonstrated how questioning led to great theoretical evolutions in the field of physics with Newton's Equation of Motion and a few other theories. Apart from collecting data by observing and experimenting, researchers should synthesise, analyse and conceptualise the information and evolve theories, he added.
Programmes available
He also told the participants about various assistance programmes available for research in physics. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defence Research and Development Organisation, Department of Atomic Energy, Indian Academy of Science and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research were offering a number of fellowships to the researchers.
Fellowships
They include fast track programme for Young Scientists, Women Fellowship, Swarnajayanthi fellowship, Ramanna fellowship and Ramanujam fellowship from the DST. "Researchers can obtain details of these research assistance programmes from the Internet," Mr. Lakshmanan said. Vice-Chancellor of the Periyar University, T. Balakrishnan, presided. Head, University Department of Physics, V. Krishnakumar, welcomed.
