BANGALORE: The State Government has procured clotting factors 8 and 9 worth Rs. 25 lakhs to be distributed through five hospitals for the poor suffering from haemophilia, Minister for Health N. Cheluvaraya Swamy said on Monday. Earlier this month, the State Government announced Rs. 1 crore for procurement of clotting factors to be distributed over the next five years. A total of 1,000 poor people have registered with haemophilia societies for free treatment, the Minister said at a function to inaugurate a workshop on treatment of haemophiliacs organised by the Health and Family Department along with St. John's Hospital. Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder that usually occurs in men because of deficiency of clotting factors in the blood. These people have less than one per cent of the factor while in a normal person it ranges from 50 to 150 per cent. The factors will be distributed at K.C. General Hospital and Vani Vilas in Bangalore, Chigateri General Hospital in Davangere, Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore and KR Hospital in Mysore. Doctors at St. John's Hospital will train government doctors in treating haemophiliacs. For persons with haemophilia, the Government's gesture will go a long way in reducing their financial burden, persons with haemophilia said.
