MADURAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu Sanitary Workers' Welfare Association took out a procession in the city pressing a charter of demands, including giving up employment of self-help groups and voluntary organisations in sanitary works. The association condemned the Centre and State Governments for opening up sanitary works to self-help groups and service organisations on a contract-basis and dubbed it as "anti-dalit" policy. The members also demanded giving full-day rest to sanitary workers on government holidays or increase the number of casual leave to 25 days. Appointing 1000 new sanitary workers to meet the growing requirements of the Madurai Corporation, constructing new houses for them, increasing the ceiling for Provident Fund loan up to 75 per cent, regularising those working for a consolidated pay, providing employment on compassionate grounds and distributing Rs.2,500 incentive to those who worked for removing dead bodies in tsunami-affected areas were the other demands.
