Government exempts some items from VAT

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders exempting some items from the Andhra Pradesh VAT Act 2005 and classifying those which attract 4 per cent tax, instead of 12.5 per cent.

According to the GO issued on August 17, the items exempted from tax include hand-operated sprayers, dusters, maps, charts, globes, atlases and rakhis.

An official release said the items which are classified in the four per cent tax category are: electric motors, oil engines (up to a capacity of 10 HP) with their starters, tractor tyres, tubes, tractor trailers, feed supplements, writing ink, geometry boxes, colour boxes, pencil sharpeners and erasers, cement poles, khandsari sugar, river sand, stone chips, extra neutral alcohol, rectified spirit and bio-diesel.

For common man

The items brought under 4 per cent tax net which benefit the common man are: vermicelli, semiya, bed sheets, pillow covers, towels, blankets, curtains, embroidery and zari articles, hypodermic syringes and needles, surgical cotton, bandages, plasters, kerosene stoves and lamps.
