No election for 24 municipalities, including 11 surrounding city

HYDERABAD: Elections are not being held to 11 municipalities surrounding the city in view of the Government's proposal to create Greater Hyderabad, besides 13 other civic bodies for various reasons.

L.B. Nagar, Uppal Kalan, Kukatpally, Rajendranagar, Seri Linganpally, Kapra, Qutubullapur, Malkajgiri, Alwal, Ramachandrapuram and Patancheru are the municipalities proposed to be merged with Greater Hyderabad.

Elections will not be held in Gajuwaka in view of its proposed merger into Visakhaptnam Municipal Corporation, the State Election Commission said on Monday.

Scheduled areas

While Palvancha, Bhadrachalam, Manuguru and Mandamarri are located in scheduled areas, the terms of the elected councils have not yet expired in Palasakasibugga, Tirupati, Hindupur, Ramagundam and Gaddiannaram municipalities.

Elections to the Kandukuru municipality have been postponed due to the proposed alteration of its limits and are not being conducted in Metpalli and Venkatagiri municipalities in view of court orders.

While the proposed creation of Greater Visakhapatnam has been cited as the reason for not holding elections there, the terms of the elected councils of Hyderabad and Rajahmundry municipal corporations have not yet expired.

TDP stages dharna

Meanwhile, the Deputy Leader of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party, T. Devender Goud along with 200 party workers staged a dharna in front of the Ranga Reddy District Collectorate on Monday demanding elections to the municipalities surrounding Hyderabad.

Mr. Goud demanded that the proposal for Greater Hyderabad be put before the municipal councils after the elections and their consent obtained.
