Krishnan is champion

PUDUKOTTAI: Ram S. Krishnan of Chennai clinched the title in the open event of the Vajpayee Trophy State-level open chess tournament, conducted by Pudukottai District Chess Association, here on Sunday. He collected 6 points out of a possible 7.

Final placings:

Open: 1. Ram S. Krishnan (Che) 6 points; 2-5 M.K. Alaguraja (MDU), Iqbal (PKT), S. Vigneshwaran (N-Kal) and T. Sridhar (PKT) 5.5.

Under-18: 1. V. Parthiban (PKT) 5; 2-4 P. Praveenkumar (TNJ), A.L. Mohamed Yousuf Ali (TRI) and P. Arun (Karur) 4.

Under-14: 1. S. Aravinth Kumar (N-Kal) 6.5; 2-3 Nagarajan (Sivakasi) and Saravana S. Pandian (SVK) 6.

Madura College wins

MADURAI: Host Madura College beat G.T.N. Arts College, Dindigul, 29-16, 29-6 for the title in the Madurai kamaraj University B zone inter-collegiate ball badminton tournament here on Monday.

In the semifinals, Madura College beat C.P.A. College, Bodi, 29-3, 29-4 and G.T.N. Arts college bt Arulmigu Palaniandavar Arts College, Palani 29-8, 29-18.

Prathip stars

Pattumani FC scored a solitary goal victory over John Paul FC in the Dindigul District Football Association `B' division league in Dindigul on Sunday. Prathip Kumar scored the match-winner.

Other results: Arasan 0 drew with Coronation 0; Alagar Memorial 0 drew with Royal FC (Nilakottai) 0; SMBM Club 3 (Satheeshkumar 2, Selvamani) bt Arasan 0; Coronation 1 (Arulanand) bt Dudly 0.

Chennai, Salem win

Chennai and Salem, with nine points each, won the team championship in the boys' section of the third State sub-junior fencing championship in Erode. Chennai (13 points) came first in the girls' section, while Kanyakumari (9) finished second.

Manikandan triumphs

S.S. Manikandan of Dolphin MHSS won the boys' under-18 title in the Madurai district chess championship for boys and girls on Sunday.
