Non-Resident Keralites to stage march today

Staff Reporter

Demands include more flights to the Gulf

THRISSUR: The Non-Resident Keralites owing allegiance to the organisation Kerala Pravasi Sangam will hold a collectorate march on August 31 to press for various demands including the implementation of the integrated migration law.

At a press conference here on Monday, the Sangam office-bearers said the other demands include rehabilitation of returnees, reduction of `unjust' air-fare to the Gulf, starting of more flights to the Gulf countries and ensuring protection to the families of the Non-Resident Keralites.

They said even though they send about Rs. 26,000 crores every year to the State, both the Central and State Governments have failed to implement any effective welfare measures for them or for their rehabilitation.

The Indian flight operators are not able to provide even the basic requirements of the Keralites travelling to the Gulf and back. They have to depend on the airports in Chennai and Mumbai for tickets to the Gulf though there are three airports in the State.

Emphasising that the families of the Non-Resident Keralites fear for their safety, they said the accused have not been arrested even in the double murder case at Mala though 16 months have lapsed.

Sangam president P. T. Kunjumuhammed and secretary P. Saidalikutty were among those who addressed the press conference.
