Panchayat chief of Gangaikondan dead

Staff Reporter

He had opposed construction of soft-drink unit and later changed his mind

TIRUNELVELI: Gangaikondan panchayat president V. Kamson (37) died in a hospital here early on Tuesday.

He had been admitted to hospital for jaundice.

Mr. Kamson was in the news last week for supporting a resolution in the council against the construction of a soft-drink manufacturing unit and going back on it in a few hours.

Council resolution

When Mr. Kamson convened the panchayat council meeting on August 23, Maanur panchayat union councillor C.S. Mani appealed to the panchayat to cancel the permission given for the construction of a soft drink manufacturing unit on SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Gangaikondan.

Mr. Kamson said that he supported it along with six councillors "as the effluents discharged from a similar unit at Plachimada in Kerala had badly ruined the soil and the environment."

"I supported the South India Bottling Company Limited [which is planning to bottle soft drinks marketed by Coca Cola] earlier since I did not know the adverse impacts. After being sensitised by a group of people who visited the unit at Plachimada, I decided to oppose the establishment of the plant," Mr. Kamson said.

However, he issued a statement in the evening supporting the soft drink unit.

"Under pressure"

When asked about the conflicting statements, he said: "I am under immense pressure from the public, police and other quarters. So I have issued this statement."
