One dead as building collapses

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old labourer was killed and seven others seriously injured when an under-construction building caved in at New Ashok Nagar in East Delhi on Tuesday. The injured have been admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital.

According to the police, the mishap occurred around 3-45 p.m. when an under-construction building caved in and the labourers working there were trapped in the debris.

Fire Service officers rushed to the spot and took out eight labourers, including a woman, from the rubble. They were rushed to hospital, where Sanjay was declared dead on arrival. The other injured were stated to be in stable condition.

One killed in auto mishap

NEW DELHI: One person was killed and four injured when the auto rickshaw they were travelling in rammed into a stationary tanker at Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi on Tuesday.

According to the police, four persons were travelling in the auto rickshaw when the accident occurred on New Rohtak Road in Punjabi Bagh around 5-45 a.m. All the injured were taken to a nearby hospital where one of them, identified as Noor Hassan (28), a resident of Loni, succumbed to his injuries sometime later. Punjabi Bagh police have arrested the auto rickshaw driver, Rameshwar.

Carpet dealer held

for hawala deals

NEW DELHI: A Kashmir-based carpet dealer has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on charges of providing funds to extremist leaders and terrorists active in Jammu and Kashmir through the hawala channel. The police have reportedly recovered 5 kg of RDX, a pistol and Rs. 62 lakhs in cash at his instance.

While the Special Cell is tight-lipped about the entire operation, it is reliably learnt that on a tip-off by the intelligence agencies, it mounted a raid and arrested the person named Aslam, staying at Greater Kailash in South Delhi, about three days ago. During interrogation, Aslam allegedly disclosed that in the garb of selling carpets, he transferred huge sums of money to a former extremist leader in Kashmir.

Arrested with heroin

NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old man has been arrested by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly possessing heroin.

According to the police, the accused, Babu Khan, was arrested at Inter-State Bus Terminus in Kashmere Gate on Monday around 3-15 p.m. He was found to be in possession of 1.5 kg heroin.

During interrogation, the accused told the police that he had a readymade garments business in Bareilly in which suffered huge losses about five years ago. Around the same time, he came in contact with a drug trafficker and began working for him to recover his losses.

Two held for betting

New Delhi: With the arrest of two alleged bookies, Delhi police today claimed to have smashed a betting racket on the ongoing one-day cricket tri-series in Zimbabwe.

Sanjay Bansal and Dinesh Kumar were apprehended yesterday from a house in Dabri area in west Delhi where they were accepting bets on the India-Zimbabwe match, police said.

A television set, five mobile phones, a three-line recording device used for receiving bets and communicating with other bookies and Rs 2,800 in cash were recovered from the accused.
