SALEM: Annoyed at inadequate water supply, residents of Rangapuram staged a demonstration in front of the Kondalampatti Police Station here on Thursday.

"Water supply to Rangapuram and several adjacent areas remains affected. The area has over 1,000 houses. We have not received a single drop of water for the last 15 days. This is not the first time we have faced this situation. On several occasions, we complained to the civic authorities, but to no avail," angry residents said.

People in the area were suffering from water-borne diseases due to consumption of water from open wells and borewells. "Children and women are the worst-affected," they said.

The Corporation authorities had not repaired the damaged public taps in the area, they said.

Burst in pipeline

Adding to their woes, a major burst occurred in the main pipeline of the Nangavalli Water Scheme, which supplied water to the Kondalampatti area, on Wednesday.

Corporation officials, who assured to restore the supply on Thursday, could not fix the problem. "Supply is expected to be restored on Friday morning," officials said.

Meanwhile, Kondalampatti police personnel pacified the residents. Junior Engineer of the area, C. Amsha, assured them that the Corporation would supply water through tankers. Seven lorries were pressed into service. "Water distribution to the area will be restored in two days," civic authorities said.
