CHENNAI: : Hande Hair Institute at Shenoy Nagar has acquired a machine that uses light rays to penetrate skin and treat acne, remove unwanted hair and rejuvenate the skin. Though the treatment appears cosmetic, the hospital aims to address the needs of people suffering from hypertrichosis, a condition characterised by unwanted hair in the body. This improves the quality of life of these individuals, said Darren Thomas, a clinical trainer from the United Kingdom. Energist Ultra VPL uses variable pulse light to remove hair and acne bacteria from under the skin. Different coloured light rays are used to treat different problems. The treatment is used to treat thread veins, spider veins and sun damage too. The machine at Hande Hospital is specially designed for dark skin. Through a process called selective thermolysis, the light targets the root of the hair and destroys proteins aiding its growth. Coloured lights are used to treat skin lesions associated with acne. The light does not work on grey hair. The company representatives said anyone 16 to 60 years could benefit. H. Krishna Hande, Hospital medical director said "we have to investigate" before prescribing the treatment. Women with polycystic ovary and men with hormonal imbalance may need it, he said. The equipment, costing costing Rs. 17.29 lakh is made in the United Kingdom and about 1,500 machines have been installed in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Europe. Film star Revathi commissioned the machine on Wednesday.
