Row over resolution to thank State Government

Staff Reporter

DMK councillor walks out of meeting

TAMBARAM: : A row over passing resolutions to thank the State Government marked the proceedings of the Alandur municipal council meeting on Tuesday.

Soon after the elected representatives assembled at the meeting hall, J. Bakthavatsalam, vice-chairman of the council and AIADMK member, circulated a copy of a resolution thanking the State Government for reducing the proposed monthly sewer charges to Rs. 105 from Rs. 150.

R.S. Bharathi, municipal chairman, however, said it could not be taken, as the local body was yet to receive an official document from the Government about the proposed monthly charges.

Mr. Bakthavatsalam said the locals should also thank the Government for re-laying 1.5 km of M.K.N. Road connecting Alandur and GST Road.

The Chairman said this too was unnecessary as the project costing Rs. 98 lakhs was executed with municipal funds.

"If you want to express your gratitude to someone, thank your fellow councillors for passing the resolution and allotting funds for relaying the roads." While a section of the councillors insisted that the State Government had to be thanked for projects taken up by the local body, a majority of them were against it.

B. Hariprasad, DMK councillor, walked out of the meeting in protest against the discrimination against his ward.

He said that while works were going on at a rapid pace in other wards, all the development works were brought to a grinding halt in his ward.

For instance, though the council passed a resolution for development works to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs in Bharathiar Lane, tenders were yet to be called for.

Demand for

marriage hall

M.M. Fahim, AIADMK councillor, said there were eight grounds vacant in B.V. Nagar and the municipality could consider constructing a marriage hall there.

A subway near the Meenambakkam railway station was abandoned. Several pedestrians were injured when they fell into the subway.

If there is no progress in the work, he along with residents in his ward would stage a road block on the GST Road.
