Towards flexible working hours

K. Ramachandran

A PLATFORM FOR EXPERTS: Saundarya Rajesh of Avtar, which is launching an Internet domain to help professionals.

CHENNAI: Are you someone who has acquired domain skills or expertise in specific professions, but are looking to improve your work-life balance? A capital idea is germinating in town.

Avtar, a Chennai-based HR company, will soon launch an Internet domain that will be a platform for such experts and professionals to find jobs that offer flexible working hours. It will also seek to match the needs of companies that are looking for people with specific domain expertise.

"Initially, we are looking to help women professionals, who want flexible work timings, that will help them meet their domestic or personal commitments," says Avtar's CEO Saundarya Rajesh.

"The new generation — I prefer to call it generation flex — is unlike those earlier. The generation flex people today value intellectual and knowledge growth more than extra money. These professionals plan work-life balance early, take periodic sabbaticals to add to their knowledge or domain skills. For them `contract' is not a bad word. They do not hesitate to hawk their domain expertise for a few years on contract to help a company move from point A to B," Ms. Rajesh says.

To benefit women

The women interface network (WIN) she proposes will be a virtual platform for furthering the concept of interim managers.

"It will help women professionals to network, share job opportunities and job experiences. Some women experts who are unable to work full time due to reasons such as maternity, can find contract jobs in which they can work for a few hours and still meet their personal commitments," she says.
