Yuki, Prerna triumph

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Yuki Bhambri and cousin Prerna Bhambri won the boys' and girls' under-14 titles respectively in the all-India Nike super series junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Thursday.

It was a family affair in the boys' final, as Yuki beat a year-and-a-half older cousin Prateek Bhambri, in straight sets, tackling the power of the rival skilfully with craft. It was the fourth meeting between the two and Yuki maintained his record of not having dropped a set.

Prerna projected a positive image of the emerging face of Indian women's tennis as she stroked fluently in taming Kyra Shroff who had an equally impressive game but lacked the consistency and patience.

The under-12 titles were bagged by Rohit Bisht and Rishika Sunkara. In a battle of brothers, Rohit beat his younger brother while Rishika, a seventh standard student of DPS, Dwaraka, humbled Nova Patel for the loss of three games. While Delhi took pride in the fact that all the four winners belonged to the State, coach Aditya Sachdeva was understandably elated at three of them, the Bhambris and Rishika, being his wards.

The finalists of the tournament have qualified for the Masters to be held in Bangalore from October 3. The winners of the Masters will be taken to the NJT International Masters to be held in Nice from October 31 to November 5.

The results (finals):

Boys: Under-14: Yuki Bhambri bt Prateek Bhambri 6-4, 7-5; Under-12: Rohit Bisht bt Ronit Bisht 6-4, 7-5.

Girls: Under-14: Prerna Bhambri bt Kyra Shroff 6-4, 6-1; Under-12: Rishika Sunkara bt Nova Patel 6-3, 6-0.
