Three new records set on day one

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three records were set on the opening day of the Kerala University inter-collegiate aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming pool here on Wednesday.

C. Abhilash of MG College, Thiruvananthapuram, set two meet records in 200m backstroke (2:27.50) and 400m IM (5:23.87).

B. Praveena also of MG College, Thiruvananthapuram accounted for the other record as she set a new mark in women's 200m freestyle (2:31.88).

At the end of the day, SN College, Chempazhanthy was leading the points table with 72 points.

Women: 200m freestyle: B. Praveena (MG) (NMR: 2:31.88). 800m freestyle: B. Praveena (MG, Tvm). 200m backstroke: S. Nisha (SNC, Chempazhanthy). 200m butterfly: B. Praveena (MG, Tvm). 200m breaststroke: O. Asha (SNC, Chempazhanthy). 400m IM: B. Praveena (MG, Tvm).

Malappuram wins

Malappuram beat Kannur on better runner rate in a rain-affected match in the North Zone (under-22) inter-district cricket championship at the Medical College Ground at Kozhikode on Thursday.

The scores: Malappuram 183 for five in 30 overs (Nauseef 67, Mahesh 46 n.o., Noushad 46) bt Kannur 139 for three in 22.1 overs (Prajeesh 77).

SB shocks Ivanios

St. Berchmans College (Changanssery) bounced back smartly and jolted defending champion Mar Ivanios (Thiruvananthapuram) to record a 78-70 win in the men's basketball semifinals of the 60th Fr. Bartholomew State-level collegiate tournaments at the Sacred Heart College, Thevara, on Thursday.
