HYDERABAD: Experts and representatives of voluntary agencies working on reducing the suffering of HIV/AIDS infected children have called for concerted efforts to tackle the problem, as estimates say children formed at least 10 per cent of the approximate 5.2 million HIV-infected population in India. They were participating at the second Regional Consultation on "Assessment of available interventions and need for services for children in need of care and protection, including those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and drug abuse." The Director, Child Welfare, Ministry of Social Justice, J.S. Kochher, said as much as the infected (HIV positive) children required attention, children in the family of those affected needed educational, economic and social support.
Convergence of action
The Director, National Institute of Social Defence, Satyendra Prakash, said that while interventions thus far were good, much more was needed. All the concerned persons had to put their heads together and work out a strategy for the convergence of action. K. Damayanthi, Director of the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society project director, said addressing the problems of the vulnerable children was the need of the hour and a challenge before the crusaders. "What has been done so far is less than 10 per cent of what is required," she said. According to Soni Kutty George, UNICEF representative, the UNICEF's perspective was to awaken social consciousness even while pumping in funds. Interventions apart, it was ultimately society that had to take care of its children, he said. The Director, Divya Disha, Isidore Phillips, said that the first consultation was held in Imphal, Manipur. The objective was to supplement primary data filed in the draft interim report following a study by the Ministry and UNICEF.
